Artist' s Bio

 

Surrounded by a home rich in visual and culinary artistry, Shante’ Stewart inherited her mother’s soulful creative traditions and began her own artistic journey with a canvas as her compass. Founder of StrokesbySMS, Stewart is a Durham, North Carolina–based artist and certified Holistic Art Therapist whose expressionist works explore themes of identity, culture, and transformation. After earning degrees in Political Science and Art Education from North Carolina Central University, she merged her passions for art, education, and policy—teaching in Durham Public Schools and now advocating for equitable opportunity through her management company, Stewart Management Solutions (SMS). Her notable works include a live painting of Vice President Kamala Harris and commissions for Run-D.M.C.’s Darryl McDaniels. Through her art and mentorship, Stewart continues to connect communities and inspire others to find beauty just a few strokes away from the noise.

Artist's Statement

 

My art is a reflection of becoming and overcoming—a visual dialogue between resilience, identity, and transformation. Through expressive portraits and abstract compositions, I explore the emotional landscapes that define who we are. Each brushstroke captures movement, emotion, and the stories of ordinary people navigating extraordinary experiences. My work invites viewers to pause, feel, and connect with the beauty found in personal evolution and shared humanity.

 

Overall, my artwork presents a captivating blend of modern self-expression and historical significance, encouraging viewers to explore themes of identity, power, and artistry. The abstract nature of my compositions allows space for personal interpretation, while layered textures and dynamic forms draw the eye across each panel—inviting reflection, curiosity, and connection.
